Introducing Orion, Our First True Augmented Reality Glasses

5 years ago we revealed our plans to develop AR glasses. We believe that people shouldn't have to choose between the wealth of information that is at their fingertips as well as being in the physical environment around them.

This is why we're present with Orion Orion, which we believe is the most sophisticated set of AR glasses we've ever created. Orion connects the virtual and physical worlds, placing people in the middle so that they feel more connected as well as connected and empowered to the world.

Why Augmented Reality Glasses?

There are three main reasons AR glasses are essential to unlocking the next big technological leap in human-oriented computing.

They allow digital experiences that are not constrained by the limitations of the smartphone screen. With huge holographic displays, they allow you to use the physical world as a canvas, putting 3D and 2D content as well as experiences wherever you like.

They seamlessly integrate AI with context that can sense and understand the surrounding environment to anticipate and address your requirements.

They're light and perfect for outdoor and indoor usage, as well as letting people look at each other's faces eye, expressions, and eyes.

That's the goal that our industry has been striving towards a device that combines the convenience and speed of wearables and a huge display, high-bandwidth inputs, and AI that is contextualized in a way that users feel comfortable wearing throughout their daily lives.

The Evolution of Smart Glasses

Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses have demonstrated the ability to give users hands-free access to important parts that make up their lives online, independent of their physical lives. You can speak to a sophisticated AI assistant, communicate with friends record important moments, and never have to take out a mobile.

However, even as Ray-Ban Meta opened up an entirely new class of display-free glasses that have been boosted by AI and XR, the XR sector has for a long time envisioned real AR glasses - one that blends the advantages of a huge holographic display with personal AI aid in a comfortable everyday wearable shape. Orion takes on the task.

Groundbreaking AR Display in an Unparalleled Form

We've been at it for several years to capture the immersive spatial experiences provided through VR as well as MR headsets and reduce the technology needed to provide the same experiences in glasses that are lightweight and fashionable.

Finding the right design, delivering stunning holographic displays, creating captivating AR experiences, creating innovative computer-human interaction (HCI) concepts, and putting it all within one seamless product are among the most challenging problems that our industry has faced. It was so difficult that we believed that we stood a less than 10 percent chance of accomplishing it. Until now.

Orion is an impressive marvel of miniaturization. The components are compressed to just a few hundredths of a millimeter. Numerous innovations were needed to bring the design to a modern shape that you're at ease wearing all day.

Orion is the most expansive field of view available in the smaller AR glasses design to date. The wide field of view enables the most immersive applications for Orion including multitasking screens and large-screen entertainment to large-scale holograms of people everything digital that can seamlessly blend into your view of the world in physical terms.

What distinguishes Orion is the fact that it is glasses in terms of style and appearance that come with clear lenses. In contrast to MR headsets, or any other AR glasses it is still possible to look at the eyes of others and their expressions and be present and share your experience with those who are around you.

Augmented Reality Experiences

As with every piece of hardware, Orion will only become as useful as the things you can achieve with it. While it's in its early stages, the opportunities that are offered by Orion offer a thrilling glimpse into the future.

Our smart AI assistant Meta AI operates on Orion. It can understand the things you're seeing physically and can assist you with effective visualizations. You can then open your fridge and request an idea of what's in the fridge. Video call with your friend while you adjust a digital family calendar while you clean the dishes.

It is possible to make a uni-directional video call to stay in touch with your family and friends in real time, and you can remain connected via WhatsApp or Messenger to send and view messages. You don't have to grab your phone, open it, locate the appropriate application, and then tell your friend you're overtime for dinner. You can do all this with your glasses.

The teams at Orion continue to build on the experience available through Orion today, to develop new experiences that are immersive and social and we're eager to show you what's to come.

A Purposeful Product Prototype

Although Orion isn't going to make its way to the doorsteps of customers, don't make a mistake: this isn't an experiment in research. It's among the most elegant product prototypes we've made and is an example of what we could ship to customers. Instead of rushing to get it on the market instead, we decided to concentrate initially on developing it internally. This allows us to build rapidly and push the boundaries of technology, allowing us to achieve a superior consumer product more quickly.

What Comes Next

Starting today with Connect and continuing through the year, we're allowing access to our Orion prototype product for Meta employees as well as select public audiences outside of Meta so that members of our team in development can gain knowledge about, improve, and work towards an eventual consumer AR glasses line of products which we're planning to launch shortly.

Now that we've shared Orion with the entire world, we're focusing on a few aspects:

  • Adjusting the AR display's quality so that the images are even more sharp
  • We are constantly optimizing our processes to make the form factor smaller
  • Scaled construction to lower costs

In the coming years, you'll be able to see new products from us, based on our research and development efforts. Orion is more than just a peek into the future - it's an insight into the possibilities that are actually that are available in the present. Between Ray-Ban Meta and Orion, We've witnessed the positives that be gained by making people more in touch and empowered with the physical world and utilizing all the benefits the digital world can provide.
